7 - Find what's in the dark - J.F. Hire

Let me try to explain what happened, don't worry if I shut my eyes, it just makes for better visualization. So here we go. Space isn't black, it never was. But there is certainly something to be said of it's void.
It's more of an ocean, you must hold your breath, and swim. Interesting how the ocean and cosmos are so similar in that fashion. Space, space everywhere, but not a place to live.
We were looking for a planet to inhabit, as was typical of the time. Our planet was crap, and so we wanted something new. Rational, we thought. We never knew that it would turn into a sort of treasure hunt.

----

Day five, I was on the observation deck as usual, which really just meant that I was on the left hand side of the shuttle instead of the right hand, which sat the pilot. There were twenty people aboard, but only four people were allowed out of stasis at a time. My shift was the first five days and the last five days. Or, that was the plan.

Later that day we were required to wake everyone up at once, and in the cramped space of the shuttle, this was no fun. John was tripping over Adam and Adam wanted to try to kill Aston, even though Rebecca was holding him back. I was lucky to maintain my spot on the observation deck, better known as the Crow's Nest, because I'm Crow.

-Crows and Ravens alike are known to reconcile conflict between those of their species for the sake of future teamwork.-

I never explained why we had to wake them up, did I? Well, here it is, we fucked up. While I was sitting on the edge of my seat, just waiting to shout "Land-Ho," the captain was veering toward uninhabited space. I was watching as it happened from the window I forever peered out of. Only after about an hour did I think to mention something. I turned around, and he was dead.

-Crows and other birds are known to mourn the dead, flapping and crawing wildly around the body for the next 24 hours, meeting in branches of a tree to overlook the deceased.-

The crew jettisoned captain into space, and second-in-command took over. Everyone was awakened under his order. I assumed that he was merely delirious from having just woken up. Medical unit 3.4 did not agree with my supposition, and merely fluttered back and forth within the shuttle, drunk on something that ensign Tom had delivered to him to take the edge off of his bio-spectrum.

-Crows often pretend to hide their food in one place, while actually hiding it in another, while their murder watches over them in hopes of finding it again before they do.-

Food was running out, of course. Land was nowhere in sight, and I was feeling out of a job, when it happened.

---

Percy was beautiful, so all of the crew was interested in getting a bit of time alone with the sexual recreation's unit. There was such a line, that only captain and I were left to strain our eyes for terrain digitally and visually.

-Crows mate for life.-

It must have been imagined, because I had been looking at the one spot for days, with nothing but blackness, darkness, inking my eyes endlessly.

A symphony of sensation curled around my trachea, choking out the words: "LAND-HO!"

The captain shot me a look, trying to gather what I was trying to say. He came over, looking forward, shaking his head violently. "Black Madness."

---

-Crows remain with their family unit for longer than many other species.-

They jettisoned me without a suit. I was as good as dead. I was being keel-hauled, and here I am, talking to you.

I still see the planet, and I'm going to keep seeing it, holding my breath, swimming.

-While some birds can swim, crows are not one of them.-

Are you going to let me drown in the dark? After I've told you my story?

I'm sorry I'm screaming now. Don't leave me in the Darksea. Don't leave.

-Crows have the widest variety of calls, crows, caws, and screeches.-

I'm screaming inside of eternity, so close to landing on the planet I see, don't leave me alone with me, my eyes don't lie, I see what sea I see.
