Train Sounds - RT Shores

"Interview with a Trainophile"

"When? Nighttime." I saw her frown at that.

"But it sounds so forlorn, like a cry for help sometimes."

"There is so much mystery though! Where is it going? Where has it been? Where is it going next time? Are there passengers or is it just freight? What kind of freight?"

She tilted her head sideways. "I guess I can see that. A train is historically mysterious and romantic."

"What is your favorite train movie?"

"I especially love any WWII train movie, but my favorite is "North by Northwest", well maybe "The Lady Vanishes"!  I laughed. That was a tough question for me.

"Both of those are by Hitchcock, right?" I nodded.

"Didn't he also do "Strangers on a Train"?

"Yeah, but they weren't on the train long and the one guy was real creepy, so I don't count that one." I smirked.

"Where did this love of trains begin?"

"My mother met my dad on a troop train during WWII!"

"Have you ever ridden on a train?"

"Once, when I was a child and I remember nothing but getting off. Of course, I did ride the El in Chicago for a summer in 1962. That was fun!"

"Your kids tell me that you silence everything in the middle of the night when you hear one coming."

"Oh, yeah, especially if it is foggy, for the fog makes the train sounds so loud and wonderful!"

"What do you hear?"

"Here we come! The train is announcing its grand entrance and also warning those who dare to try to cross in front of it."

"Wait!  "Murder on the Orient Express"!  All versions! That would be my favorite! I also love the special that David Suchet, of Poirot fame, did on the new Orient Express!"

"Why haven't you taken a train trip or even a ride since you were a kid?"

"I scheduled one for the kids and myself to go to the State Fair in Raleigh in about 1992 or 1993, but there was a train disaster right before that and I cancelled it. I think it was the bayou crash in Louisiana. Fear overtook love."

"Maybe one day you will get to ride a train again... I hope so." The reporter left and I reminisced of train sounds and train movies until I dozed, awakening only when the deep night train arrived... "Here we come!"
