Emotions RT Shores

"Emotions are for the young!"

"Bah!" I was about to begin again. The young folks sitting with me at the coffee shop knew me well, so no one said a word. Well, there was a new person there today...

"Why, 'Bah!' to emotions?" The young "I am new to life" man asked.

"Emotions are exhausting! From the first moment I saw Spock on "Star Trek" in the sixties, I wanted to be him, well Vulcan, not him. They have it right and expounded on it more in "Star Trek: Enterprise". Remember that show?" No one responded.

"On "Enterprise" they give the history of the Vulcan race and how it was almost completely decimated by emotions, so they came up with ways to be wholly logical and emotionless. I love that!"

"Ah... " The newcomer sounded, patronizingly. "So you've been hurt! Tsk, tsk, tsk. Poor you!"

My world suddenly changed... loud, slow and different. A young man punched the shoulder of the newcomer; a young woman knocked his water cup into his lap; I raised my left eyebrow and a slow, and very dangerous smirk captured the left side of my mouth.

"Yes, child, once or twice." I gathered my belongings and slowly rose, a cane in each hand. "Guys, see you later!  I am off to the library." I gave my "friends" a real smile.

I could feel all eyes on my back and tried to walk as straight as I could. I didn't want any pity at the moment. I held my head high and I walked as quickly as I could from the coffee shop.

"Nice job, asshat!" One of the young men at the coffee shop said to the newcomer. "Who the hell are you, anyway?"

Sheila spoke up. "I invited him. This is Cal, my boyfriend." She hung her head and distanced herself from her beau.

"What the fuck are you all so upset about? Why are you hanging out with an old woman anyway? "Star Trek" this and Vulcan that? Is she a bag lady? Crazy?"

He grabbed his backpack. "You coming, Sheila?" He barked.

"No." She said.

"Your loss." Said the newcomer. He slammed through the door and stormed away.

Sheila spoke first. "I am so sorry and I must go after Sophie!" They all arose from the table. They were all going after Sophie.

Sophie was easy to catch and soon they were at another coffee shop, but this time in the  sun.

"What have I always told you guys? Emotions are for the young!" They all laughed. "I am exhausted!" More laughter and a nice pat on Sheila's hand from a kind old woman.
