"Are you ready, Ms. Sparks?" I nodded.
I looked back at the crowd and saw many familiar faces; most were reporters since my kids had refused to attend.
I began to recall their questions... too many to think about now.
The walk to the pad was too short. Should I back out now? The kids would be secure for life if anything happened to me and I had nothing to leave them. They needed this and I could help advance science as well.
People were cheering, chanting, booing and some crying. I stepped onto the pad and practiced the slow breathing they had taught me.
"We are going to do a countdown, but not for you, for the technicians. Are you ready, Ma'am?" I nodded again. I couldn't speak anyway.
I felt for the transdermal patches behind each ear, one for nausea and one for vertigo.
The countdown was still had five minutes, so I scanned the crowd, just hoping the kids would show up. Nothing yet. A man ran up to me with a phone and it was both children. Now I would be okay. They weren't mad, just scared and they knew they may never see me again and vice versa.
I was to land in Vatican Square, so that was exciting and I hoped to see the Pope or someone religious. It seemed it would be a religious experience.
The countdown was to 60 and I said good bye to the kids. I breathed and said my prayers again and figured I would be talking to God the whole way. I was itching from all the electrodes all over me and was ready for it all to be over. I prayed and breathed.
"... ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, go!"
Tingling, no pain, but lots of tingling... I felt like I was being hugged tightly and I dared to open my eyes. I was surrounded by an ethereal fog and it was cold! I didn't seem to be moving, but figured I was. Time stood still.
What if I lived like this forever? God? Are you here? I felt he was.
Suddenly I felt very dizzy and nauseous, so took as deep a breath as I could. I really didn't want to barf in front of the Vatican!
Dead stop! I gasped, but held completely still as I had been directed. Nothing, just a darker fog... it was clearing now and I felt so warm. The hug loosened and I hoped I wouldn't fall.
Bright light blinded me and I shut my eyes tighter.
"Ms. Sparks? Are you all right?" A voice called to me.
"Yes! It didn't work?" I was disappointed.
"Open your eyes and see!"
I stood directly in front of the Vatican! "Oh my Go, uh, oops! OMG! I made it! It worked!" I was helped to a seat and checked out by Italian medics. I knew many more exams would begin very soon.
"A few questions, please: name?" I responded and the list continued until we got to age and then I refused to answer. They all laughed for they all knew my age.
"Your children are here in this monitor!" We all smiled and suddenly I realized how rich we were going to be. If I had died, one million to each child. Since I didn't die, five million to me to do with as I chose and it wasn't taxable.
"Whew! I am so thirsty! May I have a drink?" I sipped water and then felt I needed a quick nap, but was hustled off to the lab.
"Italy! Can we go to a vineyard and have local pasta?"
The technicians nodded. We soon arrived at the lab where I would undergo every test I had in the US to make sure all was well. I was ready to finish and then fly home in the traditional way. I would have a private jet, so not too traditional.
***
The tests lasted days and I lost weight due to having only clear liquids. Today I would be free. Breakfast was a light pasta dish and a small serving of excellent wine. Marvelous!
I would fly home tomorrow, so I only had the evening to see the city. I was tired though, so rode around and listened to a small tour. I was asleep before we were back at the lab.
Once in the lab, I needed some more food and was allowed the same fare from earlier.
I slept until I was summoned to get ready for the jet. Some of the staff had made some purchases for the children and I had the receipt for the five million deposited in my account. I hadn't stopped there though.
I had the kids online while transferred the money to special accounts just in case the Feds decided to renege on the deal. The money was spread over six accounts now, with the smallest, $100,000 in my personal account. I felt better now.
The jet was marvelous, like in the movies, with an attendant just for me. I had a Diet Pepsi and a sandwich and fell asleep again with a huge smile on my face.
***
"Captain! Captain! She's gone!" The attendant screamed.
"What do you mean she's gone?"
"She disappeared while she was asking for some dessert! She just vanished... "
The jet landed and was inspected with every type of machine and dogs. Nothing.
"The children of Ms. Sparks are riding in the motorcade with the Vice President and the Bishop. They are weary from the loss of their mother and the demand that the five million be returned to the Fed. They declined."
"Our mother survived the transport and she is entitled to the money. She must have known the Fed would try to take it back."
***
The beach was quiet, which makes sense, since it was a private beach. The two technicians and Ms. Sparks dozed in the sun and smiled. The kids would be there soon and everyone could live on the island or go their own way. No one had decided yet.
Ms. Sparks tapped her iPhone and checked the balance on all the accounts. She was glad she has listened to the techs before she attempted the transport to Italy. She was also glad she let them transport her off the jet too.
***
"She is out there somewhere!" Said a Fed. "I can feel it! She conned us!"
"No. She just got us before we could eliminate her."
"What did you do with the chamber?"
"Still available, just hidden. The aliens want that autopsy report, before they will give us any more technology."
They both shook their heads. The aliens were the two techs who had disappeared right after Ms. Sparks...
