"New Stock"

"But I saw a memo!" I stated emphatically.

"Pets? How would we even feed pets? There is barely enough food for humans!"

I wondered what I had seen then. I grabbed a notepad to jot down the words as they popped into my head.

"Pets... Space Dock 44 on 18 May, 2067 at nightfall... feed... " I couldn't recall any other words. I knew I would be there though. That was two nights away, so I could earn travel points by then.

I worked one extra shift and now had enough travel points for many trips to space dock. I decided to wear dark clothing like  in the old Earth movies. I even put some makeup on my too white skin. I was ready.

The taxi was waiting and I extended my walkway to the door, entered the taxi and then recalled my walkway. We were off! The drive would be short, but you couldn't walk near the outlands at dusk or after dark. One never knew what was out there.

I exited in front of the space docks like I belonged there. That was another thing I learned from old Earth TV. Inside it was cold and had the cleanest air. I actually felt light-headed and would have to slow down my breathing. The restrooms were unisex, so I could hide easily until I heard the commotion of shift change and then I could blend until I could reach the exterior and sneak up to dock 44.

Hiding, at night, near the space dock was creepy. Sounds seemed to surround me. I even thought I heard human voices calling me.  I must be crazy scared.

The transport arrived and I was so excited to see animals again. That was another great thing about TV, animals. I waited and waited and then I saw the strangest sight: humans in animal carriers. This must be a joke.

I sneaked up to one and looked inside. There was a young man sleeping on his side.

"Hi! Wake up!" Nothing. I scurried off hearing a group of guards coming back.

"This is the best group yet!  We have old and young, all sizes and colors and we will be rewarded well by the keepers." The guards slapped each other on the back and then walked away.

"Keepers? Who were the keepers?"

She heard something and looked around, but no one was around.

"We are the keepers and you are one of the few who knows that!

"Where are you?" I asked, scared of what I might hear.

"We are everywhere and you are in that tiny place in our community, the zoo!"

I sat silently. The zoo? Wait. "Wait! The zoo?"

"The zoo! You are the pets!"

I held my head and slowly a scream began to form. I screamed, but I was silenced before I was caged. 'You are the pets!'

"Oh!  Look at that one!  So cute!  All in black and look at the skin!  Is that dirt?" Creatures laughed as they looked at me. I looked back, but wished I hadn't...
